This morning my fifteen year old daughter wanted to hole up in her room. It was a gorgeous day in Denver, so I was determined to get outside. So I turned on some music to motivate and told her we’d leave in an hour.
She was fussy to be sure when we began our trip. As we traveled farther from our house the mood lifted. On our way there my husband called from his meeting and wanted to meet us.
We hiked. We laughed. We talked. Most of all, we connected.
My point? Kids need to be outside- it works magic that I don’t understand. I feel more connected to my daughter tonight than I did this morning, all because we were outside together.
Amazing, isn’t it? Sometimes just getting children outside can make all the difference. The outdoor classroom–we should have more of them. Beautiful photo!

You sound like a wise mom. As our children get older, they seem to need us more, but it is more challenging to connect. I’m glad you had such a wonderful day!

My 12 year-old is the same way! He’d rather be inside playing video games as a first choice, but once he’s outside, he has much more fun than he would inside. Great reminder for us to keep getting them out there!
